A suspect and a police officer were being treated for gunshot and knife wounds after Sandy Springs Police responded to a 911 call by a Cameron Drive homeowner about an intruder in the home Friday morning.
Dispatchers received a call from the home at 8:41 a.m. to report the intruder, Sgt. Salvador Ortega said. Officers were nearby because other burglaries had been reported in the area.
“Once they made entry, they confronted the suspect in the living room. The fight ensued. The suspect tried attacking one of our officers, stabbing him multiple times,” Ortega said.
Officers tried other means to stop the suspect including a taser, but those proved ineffective. As the stabbing continued at least one officer shot the suspect to stop the stabbing. He received at least one gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
The officer who received stab wounds also was being treated at the hospital. A second officer who received an injury to his hand, possibly from a bullet fragment, was treated and released, Ortega said.
“Two investigations are going on at the same time. We have the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation) investigating the officer-involved shooting, which is protocol for us,” he said.
The second investigation is by Sandy Springs detectives on the burglary and the attack by the suspect.
Officers and detectives remained on the scene in the afternoon, canvassing the neighborhood and continuing the investigation.
