The Georgia Archives Introduces New Online Research Tools for Teachers, Students, and History Buffs

The Georgia Archives is pleased to announce the addition of an “Educators” tab to our website facilitating targeted online research for educators, students, or for anyone interested in Georgia history. Located on the Georgia Archives’ website under this tab are “Educational Resources,” “National History Day” information, and “Professional Development and Workshops.”

Under “Educational Resources,” teachers and students can view documents from the Georgia Archives’ digital collections which can be used with the Georgia Studies Standards of Excellence, Eighth Grade, Historical Understandings. Other examples may be found by searching the Virtual Vault.

Digital images for documents are available for the following topics of Georgia history: Colonial Period in Georgia History, American Revolutionary Era, Westward Expansion/Native Americans (1789-1840), the Civil War in Georgia, Reconstruction, New South Era, World War I through the Great Depression, Georgia in World War II, Civil Rights Movement, and Georgia Developments Since the Late 20thCentury.

Additionally, the Georgia Archives houses collections which have not been digitized, but also support the Georgia Studies Standards of Excellence. These may be viewed by visiting the Archives in person. The Georgia Archives is open Tuesdays through Saturdays: in the morning 9:00 a.m. to noon and in the afternoon from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The facility is closed from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Also available on the “Educational Resources” site is a link to online exhibits. View curated digitally accessible exhibits showcasing resources at the Georgia Archives. Exhibits illustrate subjects in Georgia history with primary sources and include useful information for the family history researcher. New exhibits will be added periodically.

Under the “Educators” tab is a link to “Professional Development and Workshops.” The Georgia Archives hosts and holds professional development workshops throughout the year. This year, we are offering the 2021 Paper and Painting Conservation/Preservation Workshop Series. These workshops are for anyone who works in cultural heritage institutions, libraries, museums, galleries, or just has an interest in learning how to best look after their own items. The workshops range from beginner to intermediate; however, prior conservation experience is not required. Join us to gain a greater understanding of paper and paintings conservation/preservation and how to best look after your treasures!

The Georgia Archives is a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. The Georgia Archives identifies, collects, manages, preserves, provides access to, and publicizes records and information of Georgia and its people, and assists state and local government agencies with their records management.
