The Community Stakeholder Advisory Committee for the controversial police and fire training facility in southeast Atlanta will meet Tuesday, Oct. 26. at 6 p.m. via Zoom.
Additional meetings have already been scheduled for Nov. 9 and Dec. 7, both at 6 p.m. The public can watch the meetings by using the link and passcode in the graphic below.
The Atlanta City Council approved the facility in September despite heavy public opposition, which included protests outside city hall, council members’ homes, and 17 hours of public comment.
Owned by the city, but located inside DeKalb off Key Road, the public safety training facility will sit on a much larger piece of property – the 350-acre site known as the Atlanta Prison Farm.
The city had previously earmarked the property for use as greenspace, but officials maintained it was the only suitable property for the training facility. The $90 million facility will be built by the Atlanta Police Foundation.
While 85-acres will be dedicated to the training facility, city officials said the remaining 260 acres would be devoted to a public park and greenspace that ultimately might connect to the Atlanta BeltLine.
The training facility itself will have a mock-up of a town, a firefighting “drill tower,” emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC), classroom space, a firing range, space for ordinance disposal, and space for a helicopter to land in case of an emergency.
