Horizons Atlanta Expands to Include UGA as its Newest Program Site

Horizons Atlanta (HA), a nonprofit that supports K-12 students from underserved communities through its six-week summer and year-round learning programs, is excited to announce that it is expanding the Atlanta region to include the University of Georgia in Athens, beginning summer of 2022. Experienced educator Susan Cardin has been named the site’s Program Director.

Horizons Atlanta at the University of Georgia will launch with 30 students, including 15 kindergarten (rising first grade) and 15 first grade (rising second grade) students who currently attend a school in the Clarke County School District. Students enter the Horizons program based on referrals from their current teaching staff and usually remain in the program until they complete eighth grade. The Athens program will eventually serve up to 135 students through the eighth grade, adding a new grade level each summer beginning in 2023.

Horizons Atlanta at the University of Georgia marks the 10th program site for Horizons Atlanta since it launched in 1999 with only 15 students at Holy Innocents Episcopal School. Since then, it has grown to serve more than 1,000 students each year from underserved communities throughout Atlanta. The hallmark of the Horizons Atlanta program is its tuition-free six-week summer session that is hosted on campuses at universities or colleges and independent schools such as Woodward Academy which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer as a Horizons Atlanta program.

“Establishing a Horizons Atlanta site at the University of Georgia is exciting as we know that the strong partnership between UGA and Clarke County Schools District will support our efforts to help many, many young Athens scholars get the extra help they need to be successful in the classroom and increase their overall well-being,” said Horizon Atlanta’s Executive Director Alex Wan. “We are fortunate to have Susan, who lives and teaches in the area, leading this program as she has decades of experience that will ensure our students have every opportunity to learn in a fun and engaging environment.”
