Leaders at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) have created a comprehensive sustainability program that establishes the Airport as a frontrunner in the industry. On Tuesday afternoon, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens and City, Airport, and Cherry Street Energy (CSE) officials celebrated a key component of that program by cutting the ribbon on a new solar panel array at Fire Station 40.
“By using Cherry Street Energy as the City of Atlanta’s clean energy provider, the Airport can streamline the installation of these systems, providing quicker access to clean energy while reducing emissions and controlling energy costs,” said Bryan Benefiel, ATL deputy general manager and chief financial officer.
“Today’s celebration is just the latest in a long line of sustainability and green actions. In addition to these clean energy-generating panels, we have secured third-party certifications for a number of our construction projects, and we’re increasing electric vehicle charging stations throughout the Airport campus.”
This state-of-the-art solar power system, which generates 40 percent of Fire Station 40’s electricity, became fully energized on Dec. 27, 2024. It is the first of several units to be installed throughout ATL and is part of the Solar Atlanta Program, a proactive solar energy purchase agreement among the City of Atlanta, CSE, and Hartsfield-Jackson. This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone toward Atlanta’s ambitious goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2035.
