Cumberland Diamond Exchange Celebrates 40 Years of People Business

Cumberland Diamond Exchange is celebrating its 40th anniversary serving the Smyrna, Ga., Cobb County and metro Atlanta community.

“The solitary reason we are still in business today is due to our investment made in people and our community. Nothing more and nothing less,” explains Cumberland Diamond Exchange Co-Owner Mark Jacobson. “We are led by a philosophy of service that has supported more than 70,000 jewelry fans and a business that excels with 85 percent repeat business.”

Founded in 1982 by two brothers with a dream in a 1,200-sq. ft. storefront, the long-standing retailer has grown exponentially in 40 years, and its team now tops 15. The company has received numerous industry accolades as fine jewelry professionals, including:

  • 2014 Sam Olens Business Community Service Award (finalist)

  • 2015 Cobb County Small Business of the Year (2013 + 2014 finalist)

  • 2016 Jeweler of the Year by 24 Karat Club

  • 2017 Smyrna Citizen of the Year: Rhonda Jacobson (presented by Cobb Chamber of Commerce)

  • 2017 Best of Cobb 2017 (presented by Cobb Life Magazine)

  • Top 5% of independent, specialty jewelers in the US based on revenue (2000’s to current)

Jacobsen continues, “For us, success is not measured by awards or sales or carats, but rather the relationships developed and the positive impact made on people. Today, Cumberland Diamond Exchange is not a jewelry business; it is a people business.”

The husband-wife leadership team that includes Vice President Rhonda Jacobsen pursues relationships with the belief that it’s their obligation to be an active, force-changing part of the community. “It’s the lives we have improved because of our unwavering dedication to this principle that truly defines our company’s 40-year success,” adds Rhonda.  The company’s support and positive impact spans over 40 local charitable organizations, including:

  • Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (Scottish Rite) (supported in the 1990s)

  • Wellstar Foundation (supported since 2009; board member 2013-2016)

  • LiveSafe Resources (supported since 2010; board member 2015-2021; board chairperson 2018-2019; recipient of 2014 Women of Achievement) formerly YWCA of Northwest Georgia

  • SafePath Children’s Advocacy Center (supported since 2011; recipient of 2019 Crystal Gavel Award; board member, chairperson of the board)

  • Shepherd’s Men (supported since 2014)

  • Cufflinks + Charms for Charity (signature program since 2010; custom-designed jewelry for resale and recognition for charitable organizations)

  • Cobb County Performing Arts Center (supported since 2007 opening)

  • Cobb Library Association (supported since 2017)

  • Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (supported since 2017)

Cumberland Diamond Exchange might be a family-owned and operated fine jewelry store – with the third generation just born in July – but its success is its role as a people business.
