Gypsy Kitchen & The Southern Gentleman Reopen Feb. 3

After briefly closing in January for essential HVAC system upgrades, Gypsy Kitchen and The Southern Gentleman are reopening on Monday, Feb. 3. Gypsy Kitchen’s reopening also unveils a fresher, lighter look with notable design improvements that create a more inviting and contemporary atmosphere for patrons to enjoy.

To welcome back guests during its reopening week, Feb. 3-11, Gypsy Kitchen is offering one complimentary hummus and flatbread per table. On Friday, Feb. 7, the eatery is throwing a Big Reveal Party with passed hors d’oeuvres in the bar area, half-priced bottles of wine all evening, live music from 5-8 p.m., and other surprises.

The Southern Gentleman reopens its doors with a special Welcome Back prix-fixe menu of guest favorites and a sneak peek of spring dishes over Feb. 3-11. The $40 per-person menu highlights include Little Gem salad, deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, braised short ribs, Creole-spiced redfish, pineapple-glazed pork chop, and shrimp and grits. The featured beverage is the Simply Southern old-fashioned mixing Southern Proper Hospitality Group’s Knob Creek Private Barrel bourbon, bacon fat washed with candied peppercorn bacon for $18.

The January hiatuses for both restaurants allowed for replacing and modernizing the HVAC systems, ensuring more comfortable and climate-controlled environments, particularly during warmer months. Kim Fong, Southern Proper Hospitality Group’s director of art and style, seized the opportunity to update Gypsy Kitchen’s interior design as well, brightening the color palette and freshening the look and feel with softer, more feminine touches.

“Our team has spent the past few weeks immersed in a design refresh for Gypsy Kitchen,” says Chris Hadermann, Southern Proper Hospitality Group managing partner and CEO. “While it was a small window of time, that focused attention will significantly impact the atmosphere and guest experience.”

New design elements and décor include vintage artwork and family photos displayed on a growing collage wall, antique mirrors, light fixtures, and modernized textiles such as wallpaper and drapery that signal a lighter, more subtle take on the gypsy aesthetic.

“Just like the beautiful collections of a well-traveled gypsy, the details of our design will continue to develop and evolve,” adds Fong.

Council Hosts 500+ for 2025 State of MARTA, New Train Cars Unveiled

On Thursday, the Council for Quality Growth and Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) hosted the 2025 State of MARTA, a 2-part event that unveiled the new fleet of MARTA train cars before an address and presentation from Collie Greenwood, MARTA’s General Manager & CEO. More than 500 attendees from across the region and state joined the Council at Lindbergh Station for the train car reveal before gathering at Uptown Atlanta for the seated program and breakfast event. The 2025 State of MARTA was presented by AxisVHB, andWSP. Guests included Council for Quality Growth members, local elected officials, transit and transportation industry professionals, regional businesses, partner organizations, and riders of MARTA.

The event started on the train platform at Lindbergh Station with the first ever showing of MARTA’s upgraded and redesigned train cars. The train arrived on the southbound track with Collie Greenwood in tow. New features on the trains include upgraded lighting, seating, digital displays, charging station, cameras, and noise monitors. The exterior of cars features a red, gold, green, or blue lighted “smile” that denotes the color of the rail line it services. The trains were designed and developed by Stadler Rail. The full fleet arrived in Atlanta last year and is expected to be released into revenue service by 2026.

A drum line led Greenwood and guests inside Uptown Atlanta for his first State of MARTA Address since being named General Manager & CEO in late 2022.Greenwood discussed MARTA’s “next stop” and the “future of transit” that riders can expect in addition to new trains. “In the future,” he said, “MARTA will be at the heart of it all, providing safe, clean, and reliable transit to metro Atlantans.” The new fleet is the first step towards “revolutionizing” the MARTA rail experience. With it, riders will begin to see a new communications-based train control system to improve safety and performance and an automated fare collection system that accepts credit cards and smartphones at the turnstiles. “This means no more wondering where you put your Breeze card or waiting in lines to reload your fare,” said Greenwood.

He also announced a $1 billion investment to enhance all 38 rail stations. These enhancements include brighter lights, new station seating, deep cleaning, repaving, elevators, “smart” restrooms, and more. These upgrades can already be seen at Airport, Five Points, Brookhaven, East Lake, Lenox, and Indian Creek stations. These enhancements come with 2 new MARTA business units focused on cleaner and more maintained rail stations across the entire network. “In just a few years from now,” he said, “our customers will be able to enjoy a state-of-the-art transit nexus in our transformed Five Points Station.” Greenwood says he is also working to enhance the customer experience with upgraded station information screens and a brand-new MARTA mobile app and website.

The MARTA CEO also talked about MARTA Rapid and the 60-foot purple electric vehicles that will first launch in Summerhill’s “Rapid A Line” next year. These extensions of MARTA’s service will “zip past traffic in dedicated or premium lanes in every Rapid corridor developed.” Additional MARTA Rapid lines are planned for Campbellton Road and Clifton corridor in Atlanta as well as Southlake and State Route 54 in Clayton County. Bus and arterial rapid transit lines are part of the vision to further connect people to jobs and employment centers and to keep Atlanta on the map for economic investment regionally.

He shared MARTA’s past successes, including extended bus routes and a new operations and maintenance facility in Clayton County that has generated over 350 full time jobs, an apprenticeship program that helps bus technicians build rewarding careers, an 84% decline in rail safety events last year that earned MARTA a national recognition as an industry leader in transit safety, and progress of the MARTA Hope initiative which connects unhoused Atlantans with shelter, housing, jobs, services, and more in a dignified way. Greenwood addressed the regional housing affordability crisis. His transit-oriented development program works to transform the areas around MARTA stations to “create opportunities for all people of all income levels to live and thrive near transit.”

Greenwood says MARTA’s biggest challenge ahead is the complete overhaul and redesign of the existing bus system. MARTA is actively seeking community input for the NextGen Bus Network. The goal is to implement a more frequent and reliable bus system that comes every 15 minutes or less for every rider. Greenwood has his eyes set on the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Superbowl as major milestones to put “the future of transit” to the test. “Transit is a value proposition that continues to increase as time goes on,” said Greenwood. “And MARTA will continue to be the backbone of metro Atlanta’s transit network.”

The Council for Quality Growth’s State of MARTA convenes the region’s business community with its local government bodies and other local leaders every other year. The Council has a deep history as an advocate for transit, from local communities to the Gold Dome, working year-round for transit and mobility expansion across the region. “The Council’s platform for moving forward is centered on growth,” said Clyde Higgs, the Council’s 2025 Board Chair and President & CEO of the Atlanta Beltline. “That growth includes the growth of our transit network, fueled by the partnerships and communities that are right here in this crowd today.” Michael Paris, President & CEO of the Council added, “now is a crucial time for increased investment in our transit network with 2 million more people moving to this region in the next 25 years. The Council will continue to support the efforts of MARTA to deliver safe, clean, reliable, and equitable transit across the region.”

The State of MARTA program also featured remarks from Jennifer Ide, Board Chair of MARTA and Chief Legal and Financial Officer at Rimidi, Inc. and Mahesh Mani, Senior VP of Asset Management at Rubenstein Partners. Presenting sponsor, Axis, provided a video presentation, and Michael Carragher, Chair & CEO of VHB, and Jordan Myers, Senior Vice President and Georgia Transportation Business Lead of WSP, delivered remarks on behalf of their businesses.

The full recording and photo gallery from the event will be made available in the coming days at https://www.councilforqualitygrowth.org/news-press/

DS Smith Charitable Foundation Donates $150,000 to Prater’s Mill Dam; Part of $1 Million Donation to The Nature Conservancy

DS Smith, a leading global provider of sustainable, fiber-based corrugated packaging today announced its charitable foundation has donated $1 million to The Nature Conservancy to fund three conservation projects globally in the United Kingdom, Croatia and the United States. Included in the donation, $150,000 has been earmarked to support the Prater’s Mill Dam channel realignment project in Dalton, Ga. designed to reconnect the waters of Appalachian rivers.

A key goal of The Nature Conservancy is to reconnect over 10,000 miles of Appalachian rivers by 2030 to improve freshwater habitats and bolster the resilience of human communities. The Prater’s Mill Dam project in Georgia aims to realign the channel and restore the in-channel and stream bank essential for river connection. Ecological benefits of this project include improved water quality, reduces sedimentation and protection of rare, native aquatic species such as the trispot darter.

“Reconnecting and restoring waterways is one of our top priorities at The Nature Conservancy in Georgia,” said Monica Thornton, the state’s executive director. “With this generous donation from DS Smith, we will be able to explore new solutions which support both the ecological health of Coahulla Creek and the rich history of Whitfield County.”

“We are thrilled that the DS Smith Charitable Foundation is making this commitment to The Nature Conservancy to support its mission,” said Ryan Rogers, Director, Corporate Affairs, DS Smith North America. “In the U.S., DS Smith is collaborating with several conservation groups to engage our employees in environmental stewardship and propel our Now and Next sustainability strategy. Supporting this project in Georgia represents the company’s continuing legacy of leading the way in sustainability through its operations and community support.”

In addition to the project in the U.S., DS Smith’s donation will support a project to protect and restore the Mreznica, Tounjcica and Rjecina rivers in Croatia and a third project in Norwich, U.K. focused on creating a landscape plan that will enhance aquatic and terrestrial habitats in the area.

Your DeKalb Farmers Market: a Metro Atlanta Go-To for Ingredients Since 1977

Your DeKalb Farmers Market is unlike anywhere else in metro Atlanta.

The chaotic hum of the market is somehow embraced into order and organization. Multiple languages printed on identification cards reflect flags representing various countries hanging above the meat and seafood counters and rows of produce stands. Immaculate pastries are stationed behind glass, while long lines snake from the rotisserie chicken stand on Wednesdays. Shelves come stacked with ingredients that provide a glimpse of home for so many Atlantans.

Georgia Trauma Foundation Provides Community-based Continuing Education Program for Rural Hospitals

Georgia Trauma Foundation – a nonprofit investing in trauma care to help save lives in Georgia – is continuing its Rural Continuing Education Program, providing complimentary trauma care training for rural hospital emergency room providers. The goal is to allow victims of trauma to get the best care as quickly as possible before being transferred to a trauma center.

“When it comes to treating physical trauma, minutes matter,” says Cheryle Ward, executive director of Georgia Trauma Foundation, “and it can be the difference between life and death. Traumatic accidents don’t always happen close to a trauma center, so it’s crucial that rural emergency room teams are trained to provide the appropriate care.”

Georgia Trauma Foundation’s Rural Continuing Education Program stresses how it is essential to take action within the first hour a traumatic injury occurs. Physical traumas, often resulting in uncontrolled bleeding, head trauma, or spinal cord injuries, require specialized medical attention known as trauma care. These conditions can cause permanent, long-term, or serious disability and can be life threatening. In fact, uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death from trauma.

The Rural Continuing Education Program’s trauma care instructors share advanced training courses with staff at rural hospitals in areas located a considerable distance from a trauma center. The emergency room providers are taught how to properly assess and stabilize patients before swiftly transferring them to the best-suited trauma care facilities. This results in more Georgians receiving the help they need when they need it most.

Georgia Trauma Foundation coordinates the offering of these courses, which have been developed by respected medical professional organizations (American College of Surgeons and the Emergency Nurses Association) and are taught by experienced, credentialed trauma care providers, including surgeons, emergency physicians, nurses, and paramedics.

The current courses available are:

  • Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC)

Designed to enhance trauma care in rural areas, this comprehensive course focuses on creating a coordinated and efficient response by healthcare teams to treat trauma patients effectively. Training includes organizing a trauma team, preparing facilities, identifying local resources and limitations, and establishing a performance improvement process. The goal is to optimize the initial assessment and stabilization of trauma patients.

  • Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)

ENPC is an essential course to help nurses enhance their pediatric care capabilities and provide the highest standard of emergency care. It shares the most current pediatric emergency nursing practices, and how to conduct systematic assessments and apply critical care interventions.

  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC)

Guided by the minutes matter approach, TNCC gives emergency nurses the skills to timely stabilize patients and provide high-quality trauma nursing care to those with life-threatening injuries. The course includes hands-on training, and it emphasizes the importance of a systematic approach to patient assessment and the application of evidence-based practices, which are crucial in improving patient survival and recovery rates.

Healthcare professionals value continuing education programs. However, rural providers often face access barriers, including the limited number of course offerings, distance to training sites, travel-related expenses, and registration fees and other course costs. Georgia Trauma Foundation works to eliminate these barriers by offering the courses at locations throughout the state at no cost.

“Education programs are key to our mission of investing in trauma care in Georgia,” Ward says. “We’re confident the Rural Continuing Education Program is helping save lives, and we encourage the public to support our efforts through action and donations.”

This initiative is made possible through grant funding from the State Office of Rural Health, a division of the Georgia Department of Community Health.

America’s Culinary Hotspots: Atlanta is among Best Cities for Foodies

  • A social media study has revealed the US cities that are the most popular among foodies around the world.

  • Atlanta ranks ninth on the list, with over 1.8 million related hashtags across social media.

  • NYC, Miami, and Las Vegas are also named among the best destinations for food enthusiasts in the US.

New research has revealed the top cities across the US that are the most popular among tourists, hoping to explore all the culinary delights they have to offer.

The study by the social casino website Hello Millions analyzed 199 US cities listed by the US International Trade Administration as the most visited in America and the corresponding number of Instagram and TikTok hashtags relating to the food offerings in the city. Hashtags accounted for in the study include “#[city]foodie”, “#[city]restaurants”, and “#[city]placestoeat”, and more. The hashtag counts across both social media platforms were then combined and ranked to reveal the most popular.

According to social media popularity, New York City is the best city for food tourism in the US by some distance – with a staggering 12.5 million hashtags across Instagram and TikTok related to restaurants and food in the city.

Most recent figures released by the Office of the New York State Comptroller revealed that in 2019, NYC had a huge 23,650 restaurants and food industry establishments – so tourists and locals have endless culinary experiences to enjoy. With a visit to one per day, it would take a food enthusiast nearly 65 years to eat at them all.

Los Angeles is second on the list of the best US destinations for food lovers. Not only does the city attract tourists hoping to experience the life of the rich and famous, but a study found that the city has over 5.3 million hashtags relating to its culinary offerings. From classic American burgers to the city’s world-renowned taco scene, LA offers one of the best dining experiences in the US.

Taking the third spot in the ranking of the best foodie cities in America is Chicago. Known around the world for the city’s iconic deep-dish pizza, the study found that there are more than 4.1 million posts under hashtags on Instagram and TikTok relating to eateries in the Illinois city.

The first of three Texan cities included in the top 20 foodie cities in the US, Houston takes the fourth spot in the national ranking. According to the findings, there are more than a huge 3.1 million hashtags, such as ‘#AustinFood’ and ‘#AustinRestaurants, across Instagram and TikTok, with foodies keen to share their favorite finds.

Completing the top five US foodie hotspots is the tourist magnet Miami, Florida. While the city is well-known for its beautiful beaches and lively nightlife, the findings revealed that Miami is also a hit for its cuisine. The study found that the city has over 2.7 million hashtags relating to places to eat. Plus, with TripAdvisor awarding over 30 of the city’s restaurants their coveted ‘Traveller’s Choice 2023’ stamp, it is clear the city is a popular choice among food tourists.

Las Vegas follows in seventh place in the ranking. Combining the food and restaurant-related hashtags mentioning the city, the study identified an impressive 2.15 million posts showcasing the cuisine “Sin City”, as it is commonly nicknamed, has to offer.

With just under 2 million posts, Washington DC and Atlanta are the eighth and ninth best foodie hotspots in America, respectively – each gaining more than 1.9 million posts featuring hashtags related to the cities’ eateries. While Seattle rounds out the top ten with a significant 1.7 million posts tagging places to eat and specialities available in the northwestern city.

Joerg Nottebaum at Hello Millions commented on the findings: “Food tourism has been a travel trend globally for a long time, but especially with the growth of social media and content such as ‘top places to eat in…’ videos going viral in a matter of hours, it is now more popular than ever. Therefore, this study provides a vital insight into which US cities are capturing food lovers the most online.

“Cities such as Dallas and Washington DC being named on the list of foodie favorites, alongside cities long-known for their cuisine scene, such as New York City and LA, is a testament to the power of social media in enticing people from all over to indulge in all the delights other cities have to offer too.”
