Local Firm Wins Big: Goodwyn Mills Cawood Named ENR Southeast 2024 Design Firm of the Year

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is honored to be named the ENR Southeast 2024 Design Firm of the Year. This recognition follows a year marked by substantial growth through revenue, acquisitions, procurement of some of the firm’s largest contracts to date, and expanding the firm’s footprint, all while maintaining a high caliber of work and commitment to feeling local in the communities they serve.

Engineering News-Record (ENR), a benchmark publication for the architecture, engineering and construction industry, bestows the honor of Design Firm of the Year upon engineering and architecture firms across their ten different regions of the United States. The ENR Southeast region includes Alabama, the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee and Puerto Rico. The publication covers top design firms, both architects and engineers, as well as projects in the United States and worldwide.

In 2023, GMC grew in revenue by more than 30% from the previous year through high-profile projects and successful collaborations. The firm acquired two design firms, Walker Concepts Architecture of Charleston, South Carolina and Commercial Site Solutions of Greenville, South Carolina and Lutz, Florida, which bolstered its expertise and expanded its footprint with an additional office in Florida.

With 25 offices in seven states throughout the Southeast along with a wide array of services and an extensive portfolio, GMC has grown to be a leading firm in the region that keeps deep roots in the communities it serves. As referenced by the publication, the firm notably exceeds in “thinking locally while succeeding regionally,” emphasizing the team’s strength of providing service at a local level through valuing relationships.

“When you can combine strong local personal relationships with high technical expertise, we call that our superpower,” GMC CEO Jeffrey Brewer said.

The firm is involved in several notable projects throughout the Southeast. The firm has worked on notable projects throughout Georgia including Fayetteville City Hall and City Center Park, Chamblee City Hall and Fulton County Camp Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. Recognizable ongoing projects in the state include UGA Softball Complex improvements, the new middle and high schools at Sequoyah for DeKalb County Public Schools, SGMC Women and Infants Tower, the StandardAero hangar expansion at Augusta Regional Airport, the City of Commerce Wastewater Treatment Plant and Glynn County Coast Guard Beach Park improvements, among others. In addition, the firm recently announced the recent acquisition of Southland Engineering in Cartersville.

The Firm of the Year recognition is released in tandem with ENR Southeast’s Top Design Firms list, an annual ranking of firms by revenue in states within that region. GMC rose two spots to #14. In addition, the firm was ranked on market sector-specific lists, including #1 Top Alabama Design Firms, #21 Top Georgia Design Firms and #4 Top Education Design Firms.

Nearly 2M Sq Ft to Be Delivered to Atlanta Office Market in Second Half of 2024

CommercialCafe’s mid-year office pipeline report reveals that there are roughly 77 million square feet of office space currently under construction across major U.S. markets. Boston is at the forefront with about 12 million square feet, while Dallas and San Francisco closely follow with 5 million square feet each.

For this study, we used CommercialEdge data to analyze trends in office construction activity across the country’s major real estate markets. We also identified the largest office projects completed in the first half of the year (H1) and highlighted the top 20 office developments expected to be finishedin 2024.

Here are some local highlights:

  • Atlanta has 1.8 million square feet of office space under development, placing the market 16th among the markets with most active office pipelines – just behind Houston and on par with Charlotte.

  • The most significant project delivered in Atlanta in the first half of the year, was the Science Square Labs at 368,258 square feet. The project was also the 14th-largest property among the entries on the list.

At the national level:

  • Overall, Boston claimed the top spot for the most active office development in the U.S., boasting a pipeline of 12.5 million square feet of office space currently under construction. This surge is largely driven by the city’s focus on life sciences – including the 707,000-square-foot Boston Seaport – 1 Boston Wharf, which is the largest among them.

  • The Southern region claimed 7 out of the top 10 spots across the list of markets that experienced the most significant percentage increases in office inventories.

Southeast Toyota Distributors Expands Footprint – Bringing More than 100 Jobs with New Parts Distribution Center in Gwinnett

Partnership Gwinnett and Southeast Toyota Distributors, the world’s largest independent distributor of Toyotas, have announced the company’s expansion in Atlanta with the addition of a state-of-the-art parts distribution center (PDC). The new PDC, located in unincorporated Norcross, will house about 120 jobs, and represents more than $41 million in capital investment for Gwinnett and the state of Georgia.

Southeast Toyota distributes vehicles, parts, and accessories to the 177 Toyota dealerships in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, which sell approximately 20% of all Toyotas in the country. The new Gwinnett-based PDC will allow Southeast Toyota Distributors to better serve the entire southeastern region.

“With this cutting edge-facility, we are able to more effectively support the needs and growth of Toyota dealers in the region while providing an enhanced associate experience through the utilization of advanced technology in the workplace,” said Brent Sergot, president of Southeast Toyota Distributors. “We are working toward a future where we can offer our dealers unparalleled accessibility and flexibility. This new location in Gwinnett and the state of Georgia will support our continued commitment to being an associate-focused, dealer-driven partner providing the highest level of service to dealers and their customers.”

“On behalf of the State of Georgia, I want to congratulate Southeast Toyota Distributors and Gwinnett County on this exciting announcement,” said Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. “As a growing regional and global logistics hub, especially in the auto industry, Georgia is well-equipped to meet the demands of consumers and businesses alike with projects such as this.”

The new PDC will amplify dealership fulfillment services, enable e-commerce shipping ability, enhance parts shipment accuracy and improve logistics efficiency by reducing the daily miles driven by more than 7,000.

“Gwinnett County strives to be a place where businesses can flourish, residents can find opportunity, and industry can grow due to our highly accessible location and world-class infrastructure,” said Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson. “We congratulate Southeast Toyota Distributors on this expansion and thank them for providing solid job opportunities to our citizens.”

The newly constructed 453,000-square-foot facility will begin servicing dealers in early 2025, creating more than 100 initial jobs in Gwinnett. Economic development partners like NAI Brannen Goddard, Georgia Power, the Metro Atlanta Chamber, and the Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID) worked with Partnership Gwinnett and the Georgia Department of Economic Development on this project to redevelop an exurban space into a modern, technology-driven facility with local employment opportunities.

“Having Southeast Toyota Distributors located within the Gateway85 CID is nothing short of incredible,” said Gateway85 CID Executive Director Emory Morsberger. “Their presence in our community continues to raise the bar for businesses in the region and we are excited to have them in our District.”

Andrew Hickey, Director of Economic Development for Partnership Gwinnett, added, “Southeast Toyota Distributors’ commitment to improving the automotive parts supply chain supports Gwinnett’s vision for growth of this industry sector. Their focus on job creation and employment opportunities highlights Gwinnett’s highly skilled and uniquely diverse talent pool and we are grateful to have them in our community.”

Sugarcoat Announced for Uptown Atlanta

Uptown Atlanta, the 47-acre mixed-use destination being redeveloped by Rubenstein Partners, L.P. (together with its affiliates, “Rubenstein”), today announces Sugarcoat Beauty as the latest best-in-class brand joining the project’s retail mix. Sugarcoat compliments the other previously announced retailers at Uptown, including Roundhouse Kickboxing and The Commodore barbershop.

Sugarcoat is an award-winning, Atlanta-favorite nail salon that was founded by Peiru Kim, a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology. Sugarcoat will offer manicures, pedicures, facials, lashes and more. Sugarcoat will open on Main Street in early 2025, adding Uptown to its existing portfolio of neighborhood salons.

“We are thrilled to join Uptown’s mixed-use community and play a role in the revitalization of this iconic Atlanta destination,” said Kim. “Our Uptown location will deliver the exceptional quality our clients have come to expect from the Sugarcoat experience.”

Sugarcoat will join The Commodore, a retro barber shop opening on Main Street this fall, and Roundhouse Kickboxing, the Atlanta-based dynamic fitness studio, which has already started hosting classes in its new studio fronting Piedmont Road. This Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., founders Jordan McCray and Mario Richards will host an official grand opening and introduce the Founders Club membership specials with discounts of up to 20%, as well as offer a variety of free giveaways.

“We are excited to open our third location and become a part of this incredible community,” said Richards. “Our goal is to create a dynamic and inclusive space where everyone feels empowered to pursue their fitness journey. We look forward to growing with all of our new neighbors at Uptown.”

Rubenstein recently opened the first three new additions to Uptown’s globally inspired dining district, including J’ouvert Caribbean Kitchen, a Caribbean brunch concept; El Gordo, an authentic taqueria; and Bene Korean, an upscale Korean barbecue. Also expected to open in the coming months at Uptown is White Windmill, a popular Korean bakery, and Madre Selva, a new Latin coastal concept.

The new restaurants and retail join 26 Thai Kitchen and Bar and Chow À La Carte at Uptown Test Kitchen, a novel culinary experience designed to bring the community and local chefs from around the world together.

Anchored by the Lindbergh MARTA Station, Uptown encompasses nearly one million square feet of office space, 120,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space and a variety of community gathering spaces. The transit-oriented community features connectivity to the city’s major pedestrian trails, such as the Atlanta BeltLine, PATH400 and the South Fork Trail. As part of the redevelopment plan, Rubenstein modernized the 35,000-square-foot office atrium; elevated building facades; created a true, pedestrian-friendly Main Street; debuted Hambidge Center’s Cross Pollination Art Lab; and transformed The Lawn into a highly programmed community gathering space.

Dunwoody Nature Center Honors Longtime Volunteer Donna Burt on Her 90th Birthday

The Dunwoody Nature Center is proud to celebrate the 90th birthday of Donna Burt, a beloved and dedicated supporter who has volunteered with the Center since the early 2000s. A longtime Dunwoody local, Donna’s contributions have left a tangible mark not only on the Nature Center but also on numerous other local organizations, including the Dunwoody Library and the Dunwoody Garden Club. She even was part of the group of hardworking volunteers who planted thousands of trees around Dunwoody after the tornado of 1998. Donna’s love for serving her community shines through in every aspect of her volunteering.

Donna Burt’s commitment to the Dunwoody Nature Center has been recognized through the prestigious Dave Adams Award, which she received in honor of her outstanding service and dedication. This award, named after one of the Nature Center’s most passionate supporters, was given annually during the first 30 years of the Center’s history to individuals who have made significant contributions to the center’s mission of environmental education and conservation.

“My parents were big volunteers, so it comes naturally,” says Donna when asked why she gives so much of her time to her community. “My dedication to the Dunwoody Nature Center comes from spending most of my life in the outdoors, and I want the children to develop the love of nature and the outdoors.”

As Donna reaches this remarkable milestone, the Dunwoody Nature Center and the entire community celebrate her dedication and the countless hours she has spent making Dunwoody a better place. Her contributions serve as an inspiration to all who value community service and environmental preservation.
