Pool Scouts Franchisees Hope To Increase Visibility for People of Color in Business Ownership

Pool Scouts, the 76-unit pool cleaning franchise, has expanded into North Atlanta with franchisees Francesca and Leonard Black. This exciting growth brings Pool Scouts’ expert services to residents of North Atlanta, ensuring clean, safe and sparkling pools.

With the increasing demand for professional pool maintenance and cleaning services, Pool Scouts’ growth in this market signifies the brand’s commitment to delivering high-quality service and customer satisfaction. The franchise offers a range of services for swimming pools, including routine cleaning, minor repairs, and comprehensive maintenance packages tailored to meet the unique needs of each customer.

Francesca and Leonard Black decided to chase a new American dream by embracing entrepreneurship as a path to success. While Leonard has a background in corporate strategy and a family history of entrepreneurship, Francesca’s upbringing was in a traditional immigrant household, where she learned that the path to success involved working hard, getting a good education and working a traditional corporate job.

However, when the couple realized that working for themselves would provide them with more flexibility so they could spend more time with their children and become more integrated into their community, they decided to redefine the American dream. Their decision to franchise Pool Scouts* in North Atlanta was driven by a desire to show others, especially other aspiring Black business owners, that there are alternative routes to success beyond traditional corporate roles. By entering the franchising world with Pool Scouts, they aim to build visibility for people of color in the industry, demonstrating that entrepreneurship can be a viable and rewarding option for achieving financial independence and creating community impact.

“We’re confident that Francesca and Lenorard and their team will deliver the high-quality service that Pool Scouts is known for, helping more families keep their pools in pristine condition,” said Dave Mele, president of Pool Scouts.

Pool Scouts prides itself on its training program for technicians, ensuring they are equipped with the latest knowledge and tools to provide exceptional service. The franchise’s commitment to quality and consistency has earned it a strong reputation across its existing territories.

In addition to providing top-notch pool services, Pool Scouts is also dedicated to supporting its franchisees with comprehensive training, marketing support and a proven business model designed to drive success. With this territory in North Atlanta, Pool Scouts continues its mission to expand its footprint and offer reliable pool care across the United States.

Dr. Olansky began his career after graduating and completing his residency from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Inspired by his father’s dedication to the field of dermatology, Dr. Olansky followed the same professional path. In fact, shortly after graduating from medical school, Dr. Olansky, his brother, and his father joined forces and opened Olansky Dermatology in 1981. Dr. Olansky later completed a fellowship in Mohs Surgery and Procedural Dermatology at the University of Wisconsin under the direction of Dr. Frederic E. Through the years, Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics has seen great growth, building a strong roster of providers, expanding service lines, and operating multiple locations. Dr. Olansky says “I’m incredibly grateful to have experienced such an amazing journey, I look forward to seeing Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics continue with the great team here.”

Comcast Launches First Flagship Lift Zone to Advance Digital Equity at Inspiredu in Atlanta | Comcast South

Comcast Launches First Flagship Lift Zone to Advance Digital Equity at Inspiredu in Atlanta

Partnership Provides Free WiFi Access, Plus a $500,000 Grant for a Technology Makeover That Will Enable Virtual Digital Skills Training Across the State of Georgia

Comcast announced today it has installed its first Flagship Lift Zone in partnership with Inspiredu in Atlanta, Georgia. Building on the legacy of its award-winning Lift Zone program, which now offers free WiFi in more than 1,250 community centers nationwide, this inaugural Flagship Lift Zone continues five years of proud collaboration between Comcast and Inspiredu. Not only will Inspiredu still provide free, fast, and reliable WiFi for visitors, powered by Comcast Business, but also expand its reach and capacity with a grant of more than $500,000. The investment will fund a technology makeover as well as the ability to deliver even more digital skills training classes.

Comcast’s Lift Zones program, a key component of Project UP, is part of the company’s comprehensive, $1 billion commitment to advance digital equity and build a future of unlimited possibilities. Since its launch in 2020, Lift Zones have provided essential internet access for those in need outside the home. It also complements Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which offers in-home broadband connectivity to lower-income families.

“These resources will help us expand our reach not just in our local community, or even in the greater Atlanta metro area. Now, we’ll be able to provide digital skills training classes remotely to anyone, anywhere in the great state of Georgia,” said Richard Hicks, CEO & President of Inspiredu. “Given Comcast’s focus on the Internet and ensuring that everyone has the skills to navigate it, I can think of no greater partner for us at Inspiredu.”

“This Flagship Lift Zone represents the next step in our long-standing partnership with Inspiredu to bridge the digital divide here in Atlanta, said Mike McArdle, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Big South Region. “By providing free, high-speed Internet access and technology resources, we’re empowering even more Atlantans to learn, grow and connect to opportunities that can transform their lives. We’re proud to further our work with Inspiredu and invest in creating a brighter digital future for our communities.”

Technology Makeover

Comcast and Inspiredu collaborated to develop a customized plan to ensure the organization could expand its reach through the use of state-of-the-art technology. As Inspiredu was already making a significant capital investment to upgrade its facilities, Comcast was able to partner early in that planning process to ensure WiFi access points with increased reliability and speed were installed throughout the facility. In addition, other tech upgrades funded by Comcast include:

Digital cameras and whiteboards in two fully connected classrooms equipped with four 85-inch Yealink screens to offer both in-person and hybrid instruction.

A Muraflex wall that can transform the classroom area into a spacious room for up to 50 students, two smaller rooms for up to 25 students, or a fully open space to accommodate large, community events.

Two 85-inch television screens to display real-time updates, special announcements, upcoming events, and daily class schedules.

Enhanced audio-visual and design in the huddle rooms, designed for up to four people to enable Inspiredu staff to deliver digital navigator counseling sessions in a private setting.

Digital Skills Training

Part of Comcast’s investment will also enable Inpsiredu to hire more instructors, doubling the number of teachers from four to eight. This allows Inspiredu to teach both large format classes, as well as offer a greater variety of smaller, more specialized courses around topics like cyber security, financial literacy, and coding.

Over the last three years, Comcast has made more than $47.9 million in cash and in-kind contributions to more than 70 Georgia-based nonprofit organizations. These contributions support local community programs that help establish and promote the company’s Digital Equity Network in Georgia. Comcast’s network of digital equity partners help people acquire computers, provide digital skills trainings, and offer opportunities for community members to explore and train for careers in tech-related fields. They can also develop the kinds of digital skills that can help them launch and grow their own business.

Georgia Historical Society Dedicates New Historical Marker About W.E.B. Du Bois

On Wednesday, October 16, 2024, the Georgia Historical Society (GHS) unveiled a new historical marker in Atlanta about scholar, professor, editor, and advocate William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963). The newest addition to GHS’s Georgia Civil Rights Trail, the marker was dedicated in partnership with The Rich’s Foundation and Morris Brown College.

“The influence of W.E.B. Du Bois on the struggle waged by Black people for equality in America is incalculable,” said GHS President and CEO Dr. W. Todd Groce. “Just as incalculable is the influence of Georgia on Dr. Du Bois. The events he experienced and the people he met while living in our state shaped him and his scholarship, helping America to live up to the promises of liberty contained in our founding documents. This is the first biographical marker in the South about Du Bois, and it is long overdue.”

The W.E.B. Du Bois historical marker joins the GHS Georgia Civil Rights Trail, an initiative that uses Georgia Historical Markers to highlight significant stories about the struggle for civil and human rights from Reconstruction through the late twentieth century. Born shortly after the Civil War, Du Bois became one of the most influential African-American leaders of the first half of the twentieth century, often as a result of his scholarly work and publications.

“We are honored to commemorate the life and legacy of W.E.B. Du Bois with this marker, recognizing his profound contributions to civil rights, education, and social justice,” said The Rich’s Foundation Chair John Montag. “Du Bois’s tireless efforts to advocate for equality and his pursuit of knowledge continue to inspire generations.”

The marker was erected on Morris Brown College campus in Atlanta, at Fountain (Stone) Hall, the site of Du Bois’s former office. Though from Massachusetts, Du Bois lived in Georgia for two extended periods from 1897-1910 and 1934-1944. He came to Georgia having accepted a faculty position at Atlanta University (later Clark Atlanta University), eventually chairing its sociology department. As a result of his experiences and studies, Du Bois wrote some of his most influential work while in Georgia, including The Souls of Black Folk (1903), and Black Reconstruction (1935).

“It is a distinct honor to dedicate a historical marker at Morris Brown College in recognition of W.E.B. Du Bois, one of the most influential thought leaders who advanced the cause of our community,” said Morris Brown College President Dr. Kevin James. “His profound contributions continue to inspire generations, and we are proud to commemorate his legacy at this institution.”

Speakers at the dedication included: Rev. Dr. Herman “Skip” Mason, Jr., Interim President, Interdenominational Theological Center and Senior Pastor, Historic West Mitchell Christian Methodist Episcopal Church; Dr. W. Todd Groce, President and CEO, Georgia Historical Society; Dr. Kevin James, President, Morris Brown College; Dr. Juliet Asher, The Rich’s Foundation; Dr. Rachanice Candy Tate, Art Historian, Curator, and Co-Director, The Legacy Museum at Tuskegee University and Member, Fountain Hall Development Group, LLC; Jeffrey Alan Peck, Sr., CEO, W.E.B. Du Bois Educational Foundation; and Rev. Charles (Chuck) Barlow, Sr., President, The Friends of Fountain Hall and Morris Brown College alumni.

Goodwyn Mills Cawood Adds Mechanical Engineering With New Hire

Architecture and engineering firm Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is proud to announce the expansion of its services to now include mechanical engineering. This strategic addition is marked by the hiring of Rich Jarvis in the firm’s Atlanta office.

GMC is committed to providing innovative and comprehensive solutions to its clients throughout the Southeast, and the addition of mechanical engineering bolsters its offering of in-house multidisciplined services. Mechanical engineering will be housed within the firm’s existing electrical engineering department.

“Adding mechanical engineering has been our goal for quite some time,” said John Averrett, Executive Vice President of Electrical Engineering. “When we talked to Rich, we immediately knew this was the right time, and he was the right choice. We anticipate growing this division to provide mechanical, plumbing and eventually fire protection services to our clients throughout our footprint.”

Jarvis is a seasoned mechanical engineer with a three-decades-long career. He brings a wealth of engineering experience, including HVAC, plumbing and control system design, in addition to multiple years of TAB (testing, adjusting, balancing) and whole-building commissioning. He joins GMC to provide his expertise in creating efficient, maintainable and sustainable building systems and seeks to move the industry far beyond current expectations using innovative and new technologies.

He is a licensed professional engineer in Georgia, Montana, California, Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado, along with being a LEED accredited professional. Jarvis will serve as GMC’s Mechanical Engineering Regional Technical Manager in Atlanta and will be joined by engineer-in-training Nace Allen to help grow the team’s capabilities.

The addition of mechanical engineering will greatly enable GMC to continue to serve its clients and communities. While mechanical engineering will primarily be provided in the Atlanta region initially, the firm plans to expand these services throughout its footprint in the near future.
