Atlanta Volunteers Come Together to Host the Out of the Darkness Experience

In the era of Covid-19, as we all try to protect our mental health and cope with uncertainty, it’s more important than ever that we be there for each other and take steps to prevent suicide. Residents from Atlanta will be joining the thousands of people who are gathering in towns across the United States to draw attention to the suicide prevention movement. The Atlanta Out of the Darkness Experience, hosted by the Georgia Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will take place Saturday, November 7 from 2 to 3 p.m. To donate or join this event, click here.

“People have become increasingly comfortable talking about their mental health, particularly this past year. But the topic of suicide – when it comes up – is still scary for many people to think about,” says Kristen Petillo, Area Director of AFSP Georgia. “It’s only by learning more about what leads someone to suicide, the ways we can help to prevent it, and what resources are available that we can empower our communities to address this leading cause of death.”

The Atlanta Out of the Darkness Experience will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20% by the year 2025. Throughout the year, AFSP Georgia led suicideprevention efforts across the state to encourage residents to stay connected to one another, deepen conversations and work together to strengthen mental health and prevent suicide.

“Suicide touches one in four American families. By connecting and sharing our stories with each other, we will keep going in the fight to stop suicide. Together, our community sends the message that you are never alone, that healing is possible, and when we connect, we create hope. Together we keep going,” said Roland Behm, Board of Directors for AFSP Georgia.

Health and safety will remain a top priority for AFSP Georgia during the Atlanta Out of the Darkness Experience.
In an effort to keep the community safe, the organization is planning for a socially distanced, simplified event experience with the signature aspects of walk day.
