Navy Veteran Creates Support Group to Provide Safe Haven for Women Veterans

Today there are more than 93,000 female veterans across Georgia and the situation in Afghanistan is strongly impacting their mental health. Navy veteran Dr. Amy Stevens leads the Georgia Military Women (GMW) Facebook group, supporting and informing her 4,000+ members.

The Facebook group allows female veterans across the state a safe, private, virtual place to have exchanges with other veterans who understand their challenges and accomplishments.

The conversations lately have been focused around Afghanistan:

  • Veterans are discussing their personal experiences in Afghanistan and how they feel about what’s happening currently

  • Veterans share how best to get in touch with the VA for mental health support needs

  • Stevens counsels veterans about donating only to legitimate organizations for Afghan outreach

Serving thousands of Georgia veterans, the group is a platform for female veterans in Georgia to connect with one another and build community over their shared military involvement and challenges in life after service.

“The Georgia Military Women Group is all about connecting women that have served,” says Amy Stevens. “The group is about women and celebrating their military experiences.”
