Single Tickets Now Available for The Atlanta Opera’s Highly Anticipated Productions of “Rent” and “La bohème” in September 2024

The Atlanta Opera is pleased to announce that single tickets are now on sale for its upcoming productions of Jonathan Larson’s Rent and Giacomo Puccini’s La bohème, set to captivate audiences this September.

Following the resounding success of Cabaret in 2022, The Atlanta Opera is once again pushing artistic boundaries and bringing two productions to Pullman Yards as edgy, immersive audience experiences. The groundbreaking rock musical Rent, which transformed Broadway and continues to inspire audiences worldwide, pairs with a modern take on Puccini’s timeless classic “La bohème” to create vivid, thrilling, and memorable experiences for fans and newcomers alike.

Rent journies through the lives of a group of bohemian artists in New York City’s East Village, grappling with love, friendship, and the challenges of living with HIV/AIDS. With its electrifying score and deeply moving narrative, Rent remains as relevant and powerful today as it was upon its debut.

Meanwhile, an all-new production of La bohème transports audiences to the eerily hushed streets of 21st-century Brooklyn during the COVID-19 lockdown, where young love blossoms despite a worldwide health crisis and the struggles of impoverished artists. Puccini’s lush melodies and the opera’s heartrending story, have made it a staple of the operatic repertoire for over a century. Based on the 2002 Broadway version with a contemporary setting, this production has a 24-piece orchestra and will use amplified voices due to the warehouse venue.

“We are incredibly excited to bring these bold and risky new productions to the stage,” said Tomer Zvulun, Carl W. Knobloch, Jr. General and Artistic Director of The Atlanta Opera. “This is the first time an opera company has performed Rent. And even though Rent is directly inspired by Boheme, this is the first time these two works have been paired in performance. Audiences will be immersed in the music and action as the performances happen all around them. We cannot wait to share these powerful stories with the Atlanta community.”

Directed by Tomer Zvulun and Vita Tzykun, and featuring world-class performers, productions of  Rent and La bohème have never before been paired in performance even though Jonathan Larson mirrored Puccini’s opera when creating Rent. British conductor James Lowe takes the podium for both productions. With a distinguished affiliation with Houston Grand Opera, Lowe has led symphony and opera performances worldwide. Both works will be performed on a multi-platform set that brings the action into and around the audience as a colony of visual artists set up their easels and creative stations throughout the space. Participating artists will be selected in collaboration with Atlanta’s Museum of Contemporary Art and the Savannah College of Art and Design. Tickets are expected to sell quickly and audiences are encouraged to purchase early to ensure they don’t miss out on this unforgettable theatrical experience.
